Building Scale
Models
Building scale models and scenarios is a very rewarding and enjoyable hobby. It can include military models, vehicles, aircraft, ships and buildings. Scale of the models depends on both the builder's choice to standards such as HO railways or to match the scale of other items such as 1/35 scale plastic kits.
I started building kit models when I was young and never lost the love for the hobby. I eventually began creating scenarios using some of my military vehicles and aircraft and discovered the art of setting a background that provided more of a story than just a model on a shelf. I learned how to apply camouflage colours in a manner that closely depicted some of the actual equipment. I learned about adhesives, paints, textures and the use of natural items that I found outdoors or in a kitchen drawer.
As time went on I began to move to scratch-building. I worked with wood, aluminum, steel, plastic and various other products to create representations of real objects, always in scale. I use a wide variety of equipment, including a metal lathe, belt and disk bench sander, drill press, table saw, band saw, electric coping saw and other helpful devices. I never stop looking for everyday items that I can use, from flexible drinking straws to plastic packaging. Everything has a potential use. I am fortunate that I am skilled with AutoCad and can create my own files for printing on a 3D printer
